Handbuilding

HANDBUILDING

This generally defines work created by means other than the wheel. The most commonly-used method by our artists is slabs.

Slabs

Clay is rolled into sheets that are cut and assembled while the clay is soft or firm. Examples: Barbara Balfour, Merilyn Kraut, Judith Marchand, Colleen Chamberlin, Steve Jorgenson, Jennifer Johnson, Kathryne Koop

Slip-cast slabs

Liquid clay (slip) is poured onto plaster to form sheets. These sheets are decorated with liquid coloured clay and the pots are formed around moulds. Examples: Barbara Balfour
